Aspects of the population biology of sexual dandelions in the Netherlands

  • Chapter
Vegetation between land and sea

Part of the book series: Geobotany ((GEOB,volume 11))

Abstract

The taxonomic complexity of the genus Taraxacum, with about 200 described microspecies in The Netherlands alone (Hagendijk et al. 1975 and 1982) and some 1200 microspecies in the European part of its range, is to a large extent associated with the incidence of polyploidy and different reproductive systems. In the genus we find a polyploid series with x = 8; diploid species are supposed to be very rare in Europe. Most species are polyploids, mostly triploid (2n = 3x = 24) (Doll 1982).
