Abstract
The use of gradient methods of optimization allows to solve large-sized least squares inverse problems iteratively. In travel time inversion, each iteration consists on a back-projection of the travel time residuals. In waveform inversion, each iteration consists on a back-propagation of the waveform residuals. This chapter reviews methods developed by the author. Least-squares concepts are emphasized, at the expense of algorithmic details.
