Regional Brain Metabolism in Drugfree Schizophrenic Patients as Measured by Positron Emission Tomography

Clinical efficacy of positron emission tomography

Part of the book series: Developments in Nuclear Medicine ((DNUM,volume 12))

Abstract

The development of positron emission tomography (PET) is of great interest in the study of psychiatric disorders. In comparison with other functional imaging techniques PET has a better resolution and makes it also possible to study both cortical and subcortical structures three dimensionally. Of the psychiatric disorders, schizophrenia has attracted the most interest. The main reason for this are the character of the disease like disturbed thinking, hallucinations, delusions and the development of social incapability and the number of neurobiological disturbances found in the patients.
