Chromosome Numbers and Meioformulae of Chrysomelidae

Biology of Chrysomelidae

Part of the book series: Series Entomologica ((SENT,volume 42))

Abstract

A large number of papers dedicated to the chromosomes of chrysomelids have been published in the last eleven years from 1976 to 1987, increasing substantially our karvological knowledge on this family of beetles. Almost 400 new data should be added to the former compilation by Smith and Virkki (1978), therefore, an up to date list is very much in need. The total present gathered findings amount 179 genera and 745 species, subspecies or chromosomal races, of which more than 70% belong to only three subfamilies. Chrysomelinae, Galcrucinae and Alticinae, among the total of nineteen. Nearly all these findings are from species inhabiting four biogcographic regions: Palearctic (37%), Neotropical (26%), Neartic (21%) and Oriental (14%), while Australian (2%) and Ethiopian are almost completely unworked. Recent cytotaxonomic revisions of the whole or particular groups of chrysomelids are those by Petitpierre and Segarra (1985), Yadav and Basavaiah (1986), Petitpierre (1988) and Virkki (1988).
