Structural Aspects of Aquatic Plant Communities

  • Chapter
Vegetation of inland waters

Part of the book series: Handbook of vegetation science ((HAVS,volume 15-1))

Abstract

The study of water plants has always lagged behind the study of terrestrial plants. This is clearly reflected by the number of books dealing with them. In fact the number of books especially dedicated to the various aspects of morphology, physiology and ecology of these interesting plants is extremely small (Glück 1905, 1906, 1911, 1924, Arber 1920, Gessner 1955, 1959, Sculthorpe 1967, Hutchinson 1975). Of course there is a number of manuals and there are local or regional floras on aquatic plants, but these give usually pure systematic information, supplemented by notes on occurrence and distribution (Fassett 1957, Mason 1957, Aston 1973, Cook 1974, Beal 1977, Casper & Krausch 1980–1981). Further there are monographs of most aquatic families and genera, but several of these are old and by no means up to date. There are, for example, no recent monographs on such important genera as Nymphaea, Myriophyllum and Potamogeton, while some monographs only deal with a part of the area, e.g. the treatments by Taylor (1964) of Utricularia in Africa and by Lowden (1986) of Najas in tropical America.
