A Simple and Appropriate Method for the Assessment of Total Atmospheric Deposition in Forest Ecosystem Monitoring

Abstract

A method to assess long-term rates of total atmospheric deposition to forest canopies is proposed for discussion. Rates of total deposition are estimated from measurements of above- and below-canopy element fluxes (precipitation and throughfall), assumptions being made about binding forms and phases, in which special chemical constituents are deposited. The approach considers canopy interactions such as proton buffering and cation exchange and leaching from the leaves. Its application delivers plausible total deposition data and plausible differentiations between sites. It should be tested further under various environmental conditions and in connection with other methods.
