Global Stellar Populations of Elliptical Galaxies: A. Optical Properties

  • Conference paper
Towards Understanding Galaxies at Large Redshift

Abstract

The stellar population properties of elliptical galaxies are examined using a homogeneous, distance-independent set of parameters for over 400 ellipticals. The relationship between (B-V) color and the Mg2 index shows little evidence of cosmic scatter, despite the fact that the color is measured in a signficantly larger aperture. However, the relationship between Mg2 and central velocity dispersion, σ, does show evidence for a significant subset of ellipticals having weaker values of Mg2 for their values of σ.
