Environmental effects on nitrogen fixation

World crops: Cool season food legumes

Part of the book series: Current Plant Science and Biotechnology in Agriculture ((PSBA,volume 5))

Abstract

Nodules of pea, lentil, faba bean and chickpea are formed following root hair infection and have typically indeterminate growth. Environmental constraints on nitrogen fixation thus show considerable uniformity; they are generally more acute than those on plants given fertilizer N. Constraints on the establishment and functioning of the symbiosis are discussed. The potentials for minimizing these constraints by breeding, selection, and management practices are assessed.
