Abstract

Insect depredations during the storage of faba bean, pea, chickpea and lentil are significant. The most important insect pests of grain legumes during storage are the Bruchidae. Members of the genus Bruchus are important in the temperate zones of Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia, while the genus Callosobruchus has a worldwide distribution. Many factors affect the distribution of these pests and their economic importance. Some of these factors relate to seed characteristics, but most of them pertain to inadequate storage practices, especially in developing countries. Control of losses during storage depends, therefore, mainly on the improvement of storage facilities and crop sanitation. Breeding of cultivars resistant to insect pests or use of biological control agents lends little hope of success in overcoming many storage problems.
