Infection of mosquitoes with rodent malaria

  • Chapter
The Molecular Biology of Insect Disease Vectors

Abstract

The purpose of this introduction is to describe in outline only the salient aspects of the biology of Plasmodium and the mosquito vector that are required to understand the rationale of the protocols given. For a more detailed analysis the reader is directed to the comprehensive works on the subject published by Shute and Maryon (1966), Vanderberg and Gwadz (1980), Sinden (1984) and Carter and Graves (1988). An in-depth review of the complex factors regulating the transmission of Plasmodium to the mosquito (Sinden et al., 1996) may also be useful.
