Abstract
Previous editions of this chapter have charted the expansion of renal replacement therapy (RRT). In 1976, we estimated that the global total of patients who owed their lives to an artificial kidney machine was 64,000 (1). By the close of 1980, there were approximately 150,000 patients alive on regular haemodialysis therapy, 37% of them in the USA, 33% in Europe, 24% in Japan and 6% in other countries. Functioning renal transplants gave life to approximately 37,000 patients, 49% of whom were in the USA, 35% in Europe and 16% in other countries. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), a treatment modality not available in 1976 supported around 7,000 patients by the end of 1980 (2).
