Peritoneal Dialysis in Diabetics

  • Chapter
Peritoneal Dialysis

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is the only growing cause of end stage renal disease (ESRD) in all of the industrialized countries [1, 2, 3]. Approximately one quarter of all diabetic patients suffer from renal failure and many of them die of ESRD [4]. Despite this large number, fifteen years ago only a few diabetic patients were accepted for dialysis in Europe and the United States with poor results [5]. Today every one agrees that exclusion of diabetic patients from renal replacement therapy is no longer acceptable when the socio economic environment is adequate and treatment facilities are available [6, 7, 8]. Diabetic patients should be offered all dialysis methods and renal or renal and pancreas transplantation within an integrated program [9, 10, 11]. In some parts of the United States, the number of diabetic patients in the dialysis-transplant programs reaches 25 to 30% [7] and in Europe around 12% with great differences between the latin countries and the nordic countries [12, 13].
