Abstract

In the deep Interior of caves, sediments and spelaeothems are preserved in an environment of high humidity, slow weathering, near-constant temperature and negligible bioturbation. Consequently, the remanent magnetisation of these materials can yield high fidelity records of the geomagnetic field which spans a far longer timescale than is accessible by lake sediment coring. This paper describes sampling techniques developed for cave sediment palaeomagnetism and presents results recently obtained from three sites in Britain together with a complete summary of world spelaeomagnetic data.
