Tidal Currents and Transient Phenomena in the Strait of Messina: a Review

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 318))

Abstract

The strait of Messina, separating Sicily from the Italian peninsula, has been studied since Homer’s times. Scientists have always been fascinated by its strong currents generated by the opposition of tidal phase between the two contiguous Tyrrhenian and Ionian basins. Tidal barotropic and baroclinic currents, up to 2 m/s, transient barotropic eddies and nonlinear wave trains as detected from remote and in situ observations and in the light of numerical models, are here analyzed and discussed.
