Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 160))

Abstract

Attention is drawn to a class of spiral galaxies with irregularities in their HI distributions and kinematics, which may be the result of recent gas infall and may provide observational evidence for advanced merger processes. Episodic gas accretion as advocated here to explain the 21 cm line observations may be important for the building up and the evolution of disks of spiral galaxies.
