Abstract
Glaucopsyche (Maculinea) arion (LINNAEUS, 1758) is a palaearctic, obligatory myr- mecophilous butterfly. The larva first feeds on Thymus L. or Origanum vulgare L. (LI- 3), then lives and pupates in nests of its apparently only suitable host ant, Myrmica sabuleti MEINERT, 1860 (Thomas et al. 1989). In Germany butterfly and ant live on dry or semi-dry grasslands, where the ant reaches it’s highest nest densities of the white Jura (Seifert 1986). Throughout the last decades, G. arion disappeared from many parts of Europe (Eimes & Thomas 1987, Munguira et al. 1993). The aim of the present study is to identify and quantify key parameters that are important for the viability of G. arion in south-west Germany. According to Kaule (1991), minimal distances between the habitat patches, that can be recolonized, and area requirement are central questions in nature conservation. We focus here on habitat quality, population ecology, mobility, and area requirement of the butterflies and give an example for the application of an individual based stochastic model for G. arion (Griebeler et al. 1995, Poethke et al. 1994).
