Utilization and conservation status of wild food plants in Kenya

Abstract

Of the 7000 or so vascular plant species in Kenya, about 800 wild plant species are recorded to be used for food. The taxa are distributed over 105 families and over 300 genera. The paper summarises the results of four years of research and extension work carried out by the Indigenous Food Plants Programme (IFPP).

Sur les quelque 7000 espèces de plantes vasculaires du Kenya, environ 800 espèces sauvages se sont révélées avoir une valeur alimentaire. 105 familles et plus de 300 genres sont concernés. Les résultats de quatre années de recherche et de travail subséquent, réalisés par le “Indigenous Food Plants Progranune” (IFPP) sont présentés succinctement.
