Examination of the Wrist

Wrist Disorders

Abstract

The wrist is a very complicated joint which is susceptible to a number of diseases, injuries, and arthritic changes. Because there is very little subcutaneous fat and the skin is closely applied to the various structures of the wrist, physical examination is enhanced. Obviously, a very through knowledge of the anatomy of the region is required, especially that of the surface representation of the various bony landmarks. Since many of these are palpable, the best teaching aid is examination of one’s own wrist, especially in conjunction with a skeletal specimen for referral.
