Zusammenfassung

Die globale Finanz-und Wirtschaftkrise, die rasanten Entwicklungen der Ressourcenpreise und die bis heute mangelhaften Fortschritte im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel zeigen, dass neue Formen nachhaltigen Wirtschaftens erforderlich sind. Politische Akteure und NGOs fordern verstärkt die Übernahme gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung von Unternehmen, um das verloren gegangene Vertrauen in Manager, Unternehmen und die Wirtschaft als ganzes wieder aufzubauen. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wird in diesem Zusammenhang als „Zwischenschritt“ oder als betriebliche Konkretisierung des Leitbilds Nachhaltige Entwicklung angesehen. Die Europäische Kommission streicht dabei den Aspekt der Freiwilligkeit heraus, indem sie CSR als Konzept definiert, „das den Unternehmen als Grundlage dient, auf freiwilliger Basis soziale Belange und Umweltbelange in ihre Unternehmenstätigkeit und in die Wechselbeziehungen mit den Stakeholdern zu integrieren.“
