Zusammenfassung
Die Kernfunktion von Public Relations (PR) als Teil der Unternehmenskommunikation ist die Legitimation von Organisationen im öffentlichen Diskurs. Der Beitrag zeigt, dass sich Legitimität als Zustand aus einer managementorientierten, einer institutionellen und einer symbolischen Perspektive erklären und von anderen gesellschaftlichen Zuschreibungen wie Image oder Reputation abgrenzen lässt. Der Prozess der Legitimation findet in Arenen der öffentlichen Meinung statt, die durch gesellschaftliche Rechtfertigungsordnungen, institutionelle Logiken und Themenfelder miteinander verbunden sind. Aus einer strategischen Perspektive lässt sich Legitimität erwerben, verteidigen und wiederherstellen. Da Legitimität immer eine Zuschreibung der organisationalen Umwelt darstellt, finden permanent Evaluierungs- und Beurteilungsprozesse des organisationalen Handelns statt. Somit liegen im Kern der PR diskursive Legitimationsstrategien der Autorisierung, Rationalisierung, Moralisierung und Narration begründet, die sich als „accounts“ – sprachlich gebundene Skripte – in fast allen Kommunikationsmitteln finden lassen.
