Stereotactic Biopsy and Technique of Implantation (Instillation) of Radionuclids

  • Chapter
Therapy of Malignant Brain Tumors

Abstract

Since the early 1950’s, the effect of Curie (Brachy-Curie) therapy* of intracranial tumors by direct interstitial or intracavitary implanting of radioactive isotopes could first be demonstrated only in small volume tumors or cysts; in some cases the effect was even curative4, 8, 17, 25, 49, 70, 74–76, 84, 98, 99. 102, 113, 116, 129, 132, 137, 145, 148, 152. This therapy has only become possible by using stereotaxic operation methods. With a stereotactic device attached td The patient’s head, the tumor is aimed at with a cannula, precalculated to the exact millimeter. Only after the biopsy which in any case should be carried out first, the radioactive isotopes are interstitially implanted into the tumor, or the cysts are instilled, if indicated.
