Pathology of Human Intracranial Neoplasia

  • Chapter
Therapy of Malignant Brain Tumors

Abstract

Intracranial neoplasms (ICN) are divided into primary growths derived from the central nervous system (CNS) and other structures within the cranial cavity, and secondary or metastatic tumors. Although ultimately classified according to the cell of origin, primary intracranial growths can be broadly subdivided into a) neuroectodermal neoplasms arising from the CNS tissue and b) those tumors derived from other structures within the cranial cavity. The natural history of ICN is not only related to their cytology, anatomical pattern, extent and growth behavior, but also to their location or site within the cranial cavity, and the reaction of the host with respect to increased intracranial pressure, cerebral barrier functions, blood flow, and immunological response.
