Genome and Chromatin: Organization, Evolution, Function

Part of the book series: Plant Systematics and Evolution ((SYSTEMATICS,volume 2))

Abstract

Two basic phenomena of living matter, splitting (speciation etc.) during evolution and cell differentiation during somatic development, are only poorly understood. In this article the evidence for the following suggestions is discussed: 1) The phenomena of phylogenetic and ontogenetic diversification are independent of respectively the adaptation/selection system and the differential transcription control system; speciation and cell differentiation precede adaptation and regulation. 2) The mechanisms which lead to phylogenetic and ontogenetic diversification may be found among the following ones: polyploidization, differential DNA replication (e.g. saltatory replication, amplification), karyotype repatterning (including differential chromatin condensation). The non-coding repetitive DNA sequences may play an important role in organismic and cellular diversification in changing growth rate parameters and the regulatory programs which are part of the genome organization itself.
