Abstract

Fossil lake beds of the Rub’ Al Khali serve as a framework on which to hang a time-stratigraphic column for the late Quaternary (H. A. McClure, 1976), and by which characteristics of the Quaternary in general can be inferred. Additional evidence for earlier phases of the Quaternary must be derived from correlation with similar sediments in surrounding areas, from the Tertiary tectonic history of the Arabian plate, and from other more indirect lines of evidence.
