Abstract
Plasma and serum components and their metabolic products are uniquely distributed and ubiquitously present in intimate contact with the cells of the host. They inevitably participate in reactions occurring on cell membranes and in the fluid phase of the interstices. Structural alterations and the local or systemic change in their concentration, induced by internal or external factors, and the concomitant emergence of new compounds, represent the humoral signals, interplaying with the body’s cellular components and triggering them in a regulatory manner to display their genetically determined functions. In response to these humoral signals, a cell may either release new substances or physically influence the fluid phase and thus further alter the normal physiological environment for itself and for other cells. These processes do not occur randomly; rather, they follow regulatory principles. Otherwise, the process of serum or plasma protein alteration and the uncontrolled accumulation of cell-generated mediators could lead to fatal shock, hypersensitivity or autoimmune reactions. Since a considerable proportion of the population is constantly suffering from these and related diseases (1), the evaluation and knowledge of regulatory principles of the process of serum protein alteration, the mechanism of biological action of the concomitantly generated products, and of the interplay of cells with their (mediator-) changed environment (recognition and response of cells) are relevant areas of research, especially from the socio-economic view point.
