Abstract
Accurate staging of Drosophila embryos is subject to various difficulties. Since females may retain developing eggs for long periods of time before laying, elapsed time since egg laying is not a reliable measure for staging; other methods are therefore highly desirable. Developmental tables based on changes in the external morphology of the embryo are available for several species of animals. Similarly, conventions have been established to subdivide embryogenesis of Drosophila into a series of stages.
