The Genus Xanthomonas

  • Chapter
The Prokaryotes

Abstract

The first reported observation of a phytopathogenic bacterium that nowadays would be referred to the genus Xanthomonas was made in 1881 by Wakker (1883), in the case of the yellows disease of hyacinths. In his brief initial report, Wakker recorded several salient features of the causal agent which today would alert any informed phytobacteriologist to the likelihood that a Xanthomonas species was involved in this hyacinth disease: the yellow color of the bacterial mass; the copious production of a very viscous slime; the active motility of the bacteria (after the slime had been diluted with physiological saline and thus rendered less viscous); the rod shape of the bacterial cells.
