The Sheathed Bacteria

  • Chapter
The Prokaryotes

Abstract

Sheath formation occurs in a number of filamentous aquatic bacteria. These include in the first place the organisms of the Sphaerotilus-Leptothrix group, which have the ability to deposit ferric hydroxide and sometimes manganese dioxide on their sheaths. This phenomenon contributes to the heaviness and stability of the sheaths, which under certain conditions may be found in nature long after the bacteria have left these envelopes.
