Incidence, Clinical Findings and Management of Prosthetic Valve Malfunction

Update in Heart Valve Replacement

Abstract

The term prosthetic valve malfunction describes a situation in which the implanted device does not accomplish its function as a valvular substitute. This situation can be caused either by a periprosthetic leak or by true dysfunction of the prosthetic valve. Prosthetic valve dysfunction can be due to valve thrombosis, thrombendocarditis involving the prosthesis, mechanical disorder of the valve including wear or degeneration of xenografts, or tissue ingrowth (Table 1). Paravalvular and prosthetic dysfunction can occur separately or together, and in the individual case discerning between these two malfunctions may be difficult.
