Control of Late Meiosis and Ascospore Formation

  • Chapter
The Molecular Biology of Schizosaccharomyces pombe

Abstract

It was almost 35 years ago that Bresch and coworkers (Bresch et al. 1968) first isolated and analyzed sporulation-deficient mutants of Schizosaccharomyces pombe, a few years before the isolation of similar mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. They genetically defined 23 meiosis- and sporulation-specific genes, which were subsequently cloned one after another in the 1980 s (e.g. Shimoda and Uehira 1985; Shimoda et al. 1987). Investigations of meiosis-specific genes have unveiled a negative control mechanism for the initiation of meiotic differentiation. By contrast, studies of the molecular cell biology of sporulation only got under way in the past few years (Ikemoto et al. 2000; Nakase et al. 2001; Nakamura et al. 2001). With completion of the sequencing of the S. pombe genome (Chap. 2; Wood et al. 2002), genome-wide screenings of meiotic and sporulation genes have been conducted (Mata et al. 2002).
