Abstract

This paper provides an overview of theories and models which describe competition between regions. It attempts to shed light on how such competition can be defined and understood, and to provide precise answers to the question: who are the competitors; how and why do they compete. In Cheshire and Gordon (1998), territorial competition is identified as “the promotion of local economic development in competition with other territories”. In their analyses the focus is on functional urban regions or city regions. The following analysis and discussion also refers to functional regions.
