Abstract
Social Investment and Social Entrepreneurship in the UK is the story of an increasingly congested space and a contested direction of travel. The emergence of social entrepreneurship since the 1990’s, and the development of social investment since the formation of the Social Investment Taskforce by the then Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown in 2000, are important developments, but it still remains to be seen if the direction of travel is a misleading track or not, or indeed if the still nascent state of the social investment sector renders its appearance chaotic and misguided, but ultimately a progressive direction for the Third Sector.

Notes
- 1.
Please note that this essay will primarily focus on England and Wales as the Scottish Sector and the Scottish Government has adopted a slightly different approach.
- 2.
Please note that the UK sector is called many things including Social Economy Sector, Charitable Sector, Social Enterprise Sector, Voluntary Sector and Not‐for‐Profit Sector. Although there are subtle differences between these terms, it is beyond the scope of this lecture to go into these differences, so I will use the term Third Sector throughout this paper.
