Zusammenfassung

Obwohl die Idee demokratischer Selbstregierung universell ist, variiert historisch die Art und Weise, wie sie konkret umgesetzt wird. Viele Faktoren beeinflussen ihre Implementation, so u. a. die Größe des demokratischen Gemeinwesens, der Grad an gesellschaftlicher Modernität oder die dominanten Traditionslinien politischen Denkens (liberal/republikanisch). Der seit den 1990er Jahren sehr intensiv geführte interdisziplinäre Diskurs über E-Democracy richtet sein Erkenntnisinteresse auf das Niveau der technologischen Entwicklung eines politischen Gemeinwesens und analysiert den systematischen Einfluss, den die neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) auf Demokratien ausüben (vgl. Vedel 2006: 226).
