Abstract

Working with the bewildering variety of high-performance semiconductor lasers available today, it is startling to think back 20 years to the hopelessly crude devices being studied then. Occasionally one of these lasers would emit low-duty-cycle light pulses at very low temperatures and then only for seconds. Today we are still plagued by problems of yield and reliability but the performance criteria are orders of magnitude more demanding than simply convincing oneself that laser oscillation has indeed taken place. The early history and progress in lasers can be found in many excellent books and reviews [5.1–6,14]. Our purpose here is to present, in a tutorial fashion, some special topics relevant to semiconductor lasers, amplifiers and superluminescent diodes, principally as they relate to high performance fiber optical communication systems. A review of optical telecommunications is given in [5.6].
