Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinomas are usually visible grossly and range in size from several millimeters to several centimeters (Färber 1976; Greenblatt and Lijinsky 1972) (Fig. 29). They are roughly spherical, although multilobulation may distort the shape (Fig. 30), and appear as single or multiple light-tan to dark-red lesions in the liver. Rats chronically exposed to potent hepatocarcinogens frequently have multiple hepatocellular carcinomas alone or in combination with neoplastic nodules (Fig. 29). The liver of such an animal may be almost totally replaced by numerous, variably sized neoplastic and preneoplastic lesions.
