Zusammenfassung
Die Polarität ist ein Grundphänomen jeder Differenzierung im Bereich des Lebendigen (Bünning, 1952), die Entwicklung einer kugelsymmetrischen, totipotenten Keimzelle zu einem differenzierten Organismus setzt daher voraus, daß jene zunächst eine Spitze-Basis-Polarität ausbildet. In der Tat ist bereits der erste Beginn der Keimung einer kugelsymmetrischen Spore oder Zygote Ausdruck einer Polarität, indem entweder diese Keimung in einer Richtung, also linear erfolgt (Austreiben einer Hyphe bei Pilzen, eines Rhizoids bei vielen Algen, eines Protonemas bei Moosen), oder indem die erste Zellteilung inäqual verläuft (Algen, Pteridophyten), wodurch eine chloroplastenarme Rhizoidzelle und eine chloroplastenreiche Prothalliumzelle voneinander gesondert werden. Daß beide Keimungstypen nicht nur theoretisch vergleichbar sind, sondern auch an ein und demselben Objekt nebeneinander beobachtet werden können, zeigt die Fucus-Zygote, bei der äußere Bedingungen während der Keimung darüber entscheiden, ob zunächst ein Rhizoid austreibt, das dann durch eine später erfolgende Zellteilung vom übrigen Keimling abgegliedert wird, oder ob die inäquale Teilung der Rhizoidbildung vorausgeht (Farmer und Williams, 1898; Kniep, 1907).
