Zusammenfassung
Der Weg der Erforschung der Determination ist durch die Logik vorgeschrieben. Es gilt zuerst, den Zeitpunkt der Determination des zu untersuchenden Organs festzustellen (Zeitproblem, Driesch); dann muß unter Ausnutzung der Kenntnisse, welche uns die deskriptive Entwicklungsgeschichte in sorgfältigster, erfolgreichster, jahrzehntelanger Arbeit vermittelt hat und die durch das deskriptive Experiment (Kinematik, Roux) zu ergänzen sind, versucht werden, den Ort festzustehen, in dem der oder die determinierenden Faktoren liegen (Lokalisationsproblem, Driesch); und schließlich ist der Charakter der Determinationsfaktoren zu ermitteln. Mit dem Anschneiden der letzten Etappe betreten wir das Gebiet der allgemeinen Biologie. In Anbetracht dieses Forschungsganges enthält der vorliegende Artikel beschreibende und kausalanalytische Teile. Die ersteren wurden auf das Notwendigste, hauptsächlich auf die experimentellen Arbeiten, eingeschränkt. In der kausalen Analyse stehen wir vielfach noch in der ersten Etappe, der Erforschung des Zeitpunktes der Determination. Gelegentlich wurde die dritte Etappe erreicht; gerade beim Nervensystem sind wir bis zu diesem Forschungsabschnitt vorgedrungen.1 Weitere Kapitel folgen in den nächsten Bänden der Ergebnisse.
