Abstract

Haendle et al.[1] and Waldschmidt et al.[2] found in 1965 that trypsin inhibitors are present in sex glands like testes, epididymis and seminal vesicles of many mammals including man. The occurrence of trypsin inhibitors in seminal plasma [1, 2] indicates that these inhibitors are secretory proteins. In human seminal plasma an average of 150 mIU/ml is detectable [3], corresponding to the inhibition of about 0.15 mg bovine trypsin. The presence of appreciable amounts of trypsin inhibitors in human seminal plasma and in sperm indicates that they have an important function in fertilization. The regulation of inhibitor production in human accessory glands by androgens seems to be possible [1], however, no correlation was found between inhibitor activity and fructose concentration [4].In order to learn more about the physiological rĂ³le of these inhibitors in the reproductive process their isolation and more detailed biochemical characterization was necessary.
