Abstract

In recent years there has been a noticeable development in the experimental techniques to detect surface phonons. Detailed information on the long wavelength acoustic part of the spectrum has been obtained with Brillouin scattering for clean and coated surfaces | 1,2 |. The other techniques used are the inelastic scattering of atoms | 3,4 | and the high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy |5| (EELS). These two topics are discussed at length in this School both in their general aspects and in their fields of application. In particular EELS have been employed in the past for the study of vibrations of adsorbed layers of molecules in the investigation of the physics and chemistry of surfaces. More recently this technique has been used to observe surface phonons in metals.| 6,7 | In these notes we focus our attention on this particular subject.
