Tumours of the Central Nervous System

  • Chapter
Cancer in Children

Part of the book series: UICC International Union Against Cancer ((1360))

Abstract

Brain tumours form a major part of paediatric oncology practice, being the most common type of solid tumour and the second most common form of malignant disease in children aged under 14 years. However, regarding these tumors as a category is a gross oversimplification which is not particularly helpful in terms of patient management or in terms of research and development. They show wide diversity regarding the tissue of origin, site of occurrence within the central nervous system (CNS) and natural history in terms of growth rate and tumour dissemination. Brain tumours occur from the neonatal period to adolescence, and the effects that they have, and thus their clinical picture, are very much influenced by the age of the child at presentation.
