Lateral and Posterolateral Rotatory Instability of the Knee

  • Chapter
The Knee and the Cruciate Ligaments

Abstract

Injuries of the lateral and posterolateral structures of the knee joint are uncommon and have received relatively little attention compared with the extensive body of literature on ligamentous knee injuries in general (Abbot etal. 1941; Brantigan and Voshell 1941; DeLee etal. 1983 a,b; Galleazzi 1927; Galway 1972; Helfet 1974; Hughston 1962; Hughston et al. 1976 a,b; Jarvisen and Kannas 1985; Larson 1975; Macintosh 1974; Macintosh and Darby 1976; Marshall and Rubin 1977; Nicholas 1978; O’Donoghue 1950, 1955; Palmer 1938; Slocum et al. 1973; Smillie 1959). O’Donoghue (1950, 1955) and Abbot et al. (1941), who added greatly to our knowledge of knee ligament injuries, formulated a new concept favoring the aggressive surgical treatment of these lesions. But the clinical series published to date have included only isolated reports of lateral ligament injuries, and authors in general have tended to ascribe relatively little clinical importance to them (Baker et al. 1983; DeLee et al. 1983 a,b; Hughston and Jacobson 1985; Hughston and Norwood 1980; Hughston et al. 1976 b; Jobe 1980; Kannus 1989; Kennedy 1983; Kennedy and Swan 1972; Naver and Aalberg 1985; Nicholas 1978; Novich and Newark 1960; Towne et al. 1971).
