Summary

The stability of the boundary layer flowing over compliant coating has been investigated experimentally in a towing tank. The growth rates of artificially generated Tollmien-Schlichting waves are compared with calculated values to confirm the predicted stabilizing properties of appropriate coatings. The best surface tested showed an increase in transition Reynolds number of 30% over that of a rigid surface.
