The Rheological Behaviour of Ice at Small Strains

  • Conference paper
Physics and Mechanics of Ice

Summary

Many important ice engineering problems are associated with relatively small strain, dynamic loads and stress up to the failure value. The deformation behaviour of ice can be assumed to be made up of three components: fully elastic, delayed elastic and viscous. Based on this assumed rheological model and the results of laboratory and field investigations, the temperature, time, strain and stress conditions are defined for which ice can be assumed to behave in an elastic manner for engineering purposes.
