Zusammenfassung

Vor fast 130 Jahren wurde von Budge (1855) zum ersten Mal die Überempfindlichkeit eines glatten Muskels nach sympathischer Denervierung beschrieben und zwar für die Iris. Es war natürlich kein Zufall, daß diese Beobachtung am Auge gemacht wurde: Einerseits steht die normale Iris unter einem kontinuierlichen Einfluß des Sympathikus und des Parasympathikus, zum anderen ist die Weite der Pupille leicht zu beobachten bzw. quantitativ zu messen. Budge (1855) beobachtete das, was später als „paradoxe Pupillenerweiterung“ bekannt wurde: die sympathische Denervierung führt zu einem Überwiegen des Parasympathikotonus (Miosis), und sie führt auch zu einer Überempfindlichkeit gegen die mydriatische Wirkung von Substanzen wie Noradrenalin, einerlei, ob sie lokal appliziert werden oder die Iris über den Kreislauf erreichen.
