Abstract

Clinicians are well aware that the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) vary within days and between days. The classic morning stiffness observed in patients with RA is so characteristic that it has become one of the diagnostic criteria of the disease [1]. In the last decade, the circadian and circannual variability in inflammatory and arthritic diseases has been confirmed by clinical studies, and important time-dependent variations have been demonstrated, including the desirable and undesirable side effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). The concepts and principles of chronopharmacology can now be used to optimize the efficacy of NSAID in patients suffering from arthritis, but most physicians must familiarize themselves with this new approach in drug treatment.
