Vor den Gefahren von Kernwaffen ist die Menschheit schon frühzeitig gewarnt worden: es sei nur an den beschwörenden Osloer Rundfunkappell von Albert Schweitzer (1957) erinnert:

„Wo es sich um Atomwaffen handelt, kann kein Volk zu seinem Gegner sagen,Nun sollen die Waffen entscheiden’ sondern nur,Nun wollen wir miteinander Selbstmord begehen, indem wir uns gegenseitig vernichten‘. Ein Atomkrieg ist also das unvorstellbare Sinnlose und Grausige, das unter keinen Umständen Tatsache werden darf.“
