Zusammenfassung
Die mathematische Modellierung chemischer und biologischer Prozesse führt auf Problemstellungen, deren Lösung theoretische Untersuchungen und den Einsatz von Rechner-Graphik- Systemen erfordert. Computersimulationen können behilflich sein, Modellgleichungen aufzustellen, welche die im Experiment beobachteten Phänomene beschreiben. Als Beispiele wird die Strukturbildung von Bakterienpopulationen unter dem Einfluß chemischer Gradienten betrachtet. Stochastische Modelle von diskreten Populationen auf räumlichen Gittern können simuliert werden unter Annahmen über die mikroskopischen Vorgänge. Im Limes großer Populationen ergeben sich für Dichten nichtlineare partielle Differentialgleichungen, Diffusions-Reaktionsgleichungen. Chemische Prozesse wie zum Beispiel die heterogene Katalyse oder die Verbrennung werden durch Systeme ähnlicher mathematischer Struktur beschrieben. Die Dynamik solcher Systeme ist im allgemeinen sehr komplex, und die Beschreibung der auftretenden räumlich-zeitlichen Oszillationen, von Wellen und Fronten, ist eine Herausforderung, die wiederum zum Einsatz leistungsfähiger Computer führt. Voraussetzung dazu ist die Entwicklung den Problemen angepaßter Software. An ausgewählten Beispielen aus der Chemie wird die Nützlichkeit der mathematischen Modellbildung und der Computersimulation aufgewiesen, die nicht nur zu einem besseren Verständnis der Grundlagen, sondern auch zu einer besseren Verfahrenstechnik führen können.
