Dynamics and Interactions of Galaxies

Abstract

Self-consistent numerical models of interacting disk galaxies are now providing detailed answers to some key dynamical questions. Here I present recent results on mergers of equal-mass disk/halo galaxies. Such collisions produce remnants with many of the properties of ordinary elliptical galaxies. In particular, the remnants exhibit de Vaucouleurs’ luminosity profiles, tri-axial shapes supported by anisotropic velocities, and little or no rotation. Models including gas dynamics show how a merging encounter can funnel large amounts of gas to the remnant center, fueling a starburst or an active galactic nucleus.
