Use of Microwave Radiometry for Hyperthermia Monitoring and as a Basis for Thermal Dosimetry

  • Chapter
Methods of Hyperthermia Control

Part of the book series: Clinical Thermology ((1289))

Abstract

Microwave radiometry originated in Dicke’s work on atmospheric absorption (1946–1947) [1]. The technique he described has been and still is used in radio astronomy, but it can also be applied to other domains, such as:

  1. 1.

The study of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the atmosphere

  2. 2.

The teledetection of resources on earth

  3. 3.

    The recovery af avalanche victims

  4. 4.

    Meteorology, glaciology, and oceanography

  5. 5.

    Missile monitoring

  6. 6.

    More recently, medical applications
