Abstract
Nonpulsatile blood pumps are the most frequently used devices for postcardiotomy mechanical ventricular assistance and it is estimated that in the United States over 1500 patients a year now receive postoperative support. Our initial experience with mechanical ventricular assistance was with the Hemadyne (Medtronic) centrifugal pump, as an aid to weaning patients from cardiopulmonary bypass following corrective cardiac surgical procedures. This system was discontinued and we, like many other groups, now use the Biopump (Biomedicus). This latter device is also used in standard cardiopulmonary bypass and as part of an extracorporeal membrane oxygenating system.
